Most business books focus on growing your business to the point where it either provides passive income for life or can be sold to a competitor or taken public. The articles in this section of my website aren’t for people who want to go that route. These articles are for people who love what they do and want to spend their days (or nights) immersed in something that brings them joy.
Think of this section as a practical guide to setting up, carrying on, and sometimes, getting over running a business. It doesn’t assume your mission is divine, that your motives are purely financial, that managing a business in your chosen field is as satisfying as working in that field, or that your target market is a bunch of gulls.
These articles are for people who want to run a business but who need to sharpen their vision so that they do exactly the right thing, for an appreciative market, and stay afloat while living a good life.
We spend a lot of our lives at work. Entrepreneurs spend more of their time at work than most people do. If most of that time is spent on tasks that you hate, then your life and your business will feel joyless. Holding out the prospect of great wealth doesn’t make up for the loss of time you experience in the now.
As to me, I’m not a business coach, but I have worked with dozens of businesses that tried to justify themselves to their target audience and to themselves as they developed content for their marketing. I have run my own business for almost 20 years and I have, far too often, followed the advice of business coaches who had a restrictive vision of what business should be. As I disentangle myself from the mess that caused, I want to share what I have learned with others.
